Reeder received the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal. Reeder led the team that won a NASA Group Achievement Award for demonstrating the capability of the microwave landing system. He was instrumental in Langley's acquisition of the 737 "flying laboratory" that flew from 1974 until its decommissioning in 1997. Reeder's most important and last contribution to aviation may have been convincing NASA management to pursue advanced transport operating systems that identified, evaluated and demonstrated systems and concepts to enhance airport runway capacity and all-weather flight. He was a member of the team that drafted the original military specifications for the flying qualities of helicopters, and a founding member of the Twirly Birds. Reeder was NASA's first helicopter test pilot and was best know for his pioneering work in helicopter and vertical takeoff and landing aerodynamics and handling. Reeder became assistant chief of the Flight Mechanics and Technology Division. In 1951, he became head of Flight Operations and chief test pilot. In his first year there, he flew 19 new aircraft, nine of which were fighters. He was assigned to the full-scale wind tunnel at Langley and transferred to the Flight Research Division in 1942.
Reeder studied aeronautical engineering at the University of Michigan, and upon graduation in 1938, was hired by NACA. "I knew I wanted to be a test pilot since I was in 10th grade," he recalled in a 1990 interview. By high school, he knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up. He became interested in flying in 1923 when he saw his first aircraft, a World War I Curtiss flying boat. Reeder was born May 27, 1916, in Houghton, Mich. Reeder rose from junior aeronautical engineer at the full-scale wind tunnel, to test pilot, to head of flight operations and chief test pilot, to assistant chief of flight mechanics and technology. Along the way, he captained more than 235 airplanes, 61 helicopters and eight vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Reeder's extensive career with NASA and the agency's predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics began in 1938 and ended in 1980. Funeral services will immediately follow at 1pm. An additional visitation will be held at Halls Funeral Home in Livingston, TN on Saturday, Jfrom 11am to 1pm. Visitation will be at the West Harpeth Funeral Home on Charlotte Pike in Nashville on Thursday, Jfrom 4 to 8pm. He was a member of the Pasquo Church of Christ in Bellevue, TN. He enjoyed going to and watching the Predators, Titans and his beloved Tennessee VOLS. He was a lifelong lover of dogs and an avid sports fan. Following his retirement, he began his new career (hobbies) of reconstruction of his home, landscaping, gardening and taught himself woodworking. He was a proud member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union #572. Following discharge, he returned to his hometown in Overton County and subsequently moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he entered his long career as a Pipefitter. Preceded in death by his father Clarvis Reeder, mother Nellie (Kyle) Reeder, brothers Fred Reeder, Mayford Reeder and Shirlie Reeder.Īt the age of 18, Marshall enlisted and served in the United States Navy and completed 3 Mediterranean Cruise Tours on the USS Suribachi (AE-21). He is survived by his wife Rita (Boswell) Reeder and son Effrin Reeder of Hermitage, Tennessee, sisters Charlene Sisco, (Jim) of Madison, Tennessee, Betty Bowman of Livingston, Tennessee, John Reeder of Knoxville, Tennessee and Billy Reeder of Houston, Texas.
